Friends of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod

Started in 1974 by Michael Fay and other members of the Publicity Committee, FLIME was formed to support the Eisteddfod.

We have been able to give a donation to the Eisteddfod funds each year enabling the Eisteddfod to purchase equipment ranging from seats to computers, to understage speakers, to stage backdrops, to closed circuit TV for security and much more.

FLIME’s emblem, using the United Nations colours of blue and white, depicts a pair of hands joined in friendship, typifying the friendship that both FLIME and the Eisteddfod have encouraged between performers, countries and members of the audience.

The Friendship is maintained in the ‘Friends hospitality tent’ during each Eisteddfod, where members meet, talk and enjoy their tea and coffee.

For many years ‘Figaro’ stood by the hospitality tent entrance along with the many faithful helpers who have welcomed friends over the years.

Friends meet for a reunion dinner and AGM each October. ‘Limelight’, our newsletter, is   published three times a year giving members news of the Eisteddfod and background stories about Eisteddfod personnel  and performers.

The FLIME committee members are available at each Eisteddfod to receive members comments, praise and criticism of the Eisteddfod and to act as a channel for information to the Eisteddfod Committees at their monthly meetings.

FLIME was involved in setting up the Young Singer of the Year competition, funding the prizes for many years.
Friends were very involved in the Albert Hall concert, the only time a concert with the ‘Spirit of Llangollen’ has been held in London. This raised much needed funds towards the Royal International Pavilion.

London Friends 

A London branch was established in 1988 by Sir Maldwyn Thomas, to promote the Eisteddfod in the London area, and to arrange events for FLIME members in the home counties. They have been able to raise over £6,000 for the
